I was really exhausted yesterday, so I didn’t get to the Friday 5, but I still want to do it because it is so appropriate this week, so here we go. Mother Laura writes:

Songbird just had an interview for a “vague and interesting” possibility, and More Cows than People is doing campus visits for doctoral programs. There always seem to be a few RevGals applying for new positions, and I just got my first call for this year’s preliminary interviews for college teaching jobs at the American Academy of Religion meeting in San Diego coming up in a few weeks. It’s for my dream job among this year’s offerings, and I am flipflopping between excitement and nervousness. So please keep your fingers crossed and say a little prayer for everyone facing such conversations, and share your thoughts on the wonderful world of interviews:

1. What was the most memorable interview you ever had?

Well, I guess I have to say the one I just had on Thursday. It was so not what I expected it would be! It was way more pleasant than I thought it would be, even though they were pointing out how unclear my post was.

2. Have you ever been the interviewer rather than the interviewee? If so, are you a tiger, a creampuff, or somewhere in between?

I interviewed a few people as a shift manager for a pizza place I worked at. I didn’t do it more than three times, so I wouldn’t say I really know anything and I was only 17 and then barely 18 at the time.

3. Do phone interviews make you more or less nervous than in-person ones? (more…)

This Fall my family has been energetically watching Top Chef on the Bravo channel. My teenage daughter watches with the dream of some day being a chef. My husband watches because he loves reality shows and I mean, really loves them. Plus the whole competition thing really works for him. Me, I love cooking and good food. Every so often I get an idea from this group of talented young chefs who are competing for big money and honors galore.

The winner for this season was Hung. Not the fan favorite, but he won fair and square. In his bio, he says if he were a food “I would be spicy chili – it takes a while to get used to, but once you eat it you always come back for more!” With that in mind, here is this week’s Friday Five.

If I were a food, I think I would be a lemon. Definitely sour at times, but mixed with a little sugar, delicious. Also, I can be a little fruity at times!

2. What is one of the most memorable meals you ever had? And where?
My husband and I honeymooned at The Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island. They have great dinners. They have 5 courses (their breakfasts have more like ten). It’s amazing. Plus, you have to be in formal wear after 6 p.m. It was a lot of fun!

3. What is your favorite comfort food from childhood?
My favorite comfort food would be my dad’s cheese manicotti. It was so delicious, but he died about 6 & 1/2 years ago and no one makes it the same. 😦 So, my favorite that I can still get is probably tuna noodle casserole. I know that is probably strange.Photo by cxn926 on Flickr

4. When going to a church potluck, what one recipe from your kitchen is sure to be a hit?
My hubby’s family always took baked hashbrowns because everyone asked for them. We do the same now. My mother-in-law also makes an apple, cool-whip, pudding, Snicker salad that I sometimes take, too. It’s always a big hit, too.

I’m a rather picky eater and I try to avoid all gross and strange things. I can’t really think of anything. Like I said, I avoid it at all costs. My hubby has eaten a cow tongue taco! Eww!

Update: SpiritMists‘ post reminded me of the Bloody Stump Cake I once ate. My sister-in-law and her brothers came up with and named the recipe. It sounds and even kinda looks gross. I think it’s pretty much just chocolate cake mix (maybe with red food coloring added) with cherry pie filling on top. I guess that’s what you get when you have three brothers. It was really was yummy, though!

Bonus question: What’s your favorite drink to order when looking forward to a great meal?
I don’t drink alcoholic beverages. My favorite drink with anything Mexican or with popcorn is Lemonade. I am a self-professed lemonade connoisseur.

Hello all! Being in RevGals has been a lot of fun this week. One of the things they do each week is ask 5 questions each Friday for everyone to answer on their blogs. It sounds like fun, but I have to say I am looking forward to reading other blogger’s answers even more. So, her is my first Friday 5!

With Jo, Jon and Chris all moving to college and University accommodation there has been a big clear up going on in the Coleman household. We have been sorting and trying hard not just to junk stuff, but actually to get it to where it can be useful. On a brighter note we have used Freecycle ( check it out) to provide the twins with pots and pans etc that other folk were clearing out.

Making the most of our resources is important, I have been challenged this week by the amount of stuff we accumulate, I’d love to live a simpler lifestyle, it would be good for me, and for the environment I think…

1. Are you a hoarder or a minimalist?

I am a recovering hoarder. My BIL and SIL, Tory and Annie, once gave us The New Messies Manual. It was a very good and helpful read. I suggest it to other hoarders. They gave it to us after it helped them. I have 2 pre-schoolers, aged 3 and 4, so my house is still cluttered. I also still hoard art and craft supplies. (more…)
